John Vining | Assistant Coach

John Vining was named the men’s and women’s golf assistant coach on June 30, 2016.

In the 2014-15 season, Vining assisted the men’s team to a Summit League Championship. The Coyotes erased an 11-stroke deficit and passed two teams on the final day to claim the program’s first championship.

Vining has helped guide Sam Matthew, Alex Kline and Brenna Lervick to All-Summit League Team honors, while Janice Baumberger and Matthew earned Academic All-League honors. In 2015-16, Jordan Rykal and Lervick were named First Team All-Summit League.

Vining has been part of the Coyote golf program since 2008-09. He started out his career as a member of the team and played for four seasons from 2008-12, with two of those seasons being under current head coach Nick Hovden. In 2013-14, Vining served as a graduate assistant before moving into a part-time assistant role from 2014-16.

As a player, Vining was named to the American Sky All-Conference Academic Team and the All-Summit League Academic Team. He was voted on and received the Coyote Character Award during his senior season in 2012.

Golf is a rich tradition in Vining’s family. His grandfather, Tom Egan, is a member of the South Dakota Golf Association Hall of Fame. Vining’s aunt, Jane Egan, played on the LPGA Tour and is a member of the New Mexico State University Hall of Fame. His father, Rich, played Division I golf at Texas Pan American.

Vining is a native of Sioux Falls, S.D., and has coached four years of basketball at Sioux Falls Lincoln and worked for The First Tee of Sioux Falls (junior golf).

Vining and his wife, Sarah, reside in Sioux Falls.
